Workers in BC Seniors’ Homes Need Common Standards Now!

Our seniors deserve the best possible care. And that starts with making sure the people who care for them are treated fairly. A recent survey of care aides found some troubling results.

  • More than half of the care aides surveyed say they do not have enough time to meet the needs of the seniors they care for.
  • More than two-thirds say the seniors they care for are rushed through basic care routines, and do not receive adequate attention.
  • Forty-five per cent report that they have been off work because of an injury suffered at work and 82 per cent say they’ve been subjected to acts of violence or aggression at work.

Working and caring conditions have gotten so bad that nearly half of the care aides surveyed are considering leaving health care altogether.

The B.C. government promised in 2020 to establish common standards across all care homes, including not-for-profit and for-profit homes alike. Now that commitment has to become a reality. These recent survey results show how urgent the situation has become.

Add your name today to call on the B.C. government to make good on their promise to establish common standards across all care homes — and show care home workers they have your support! We’ll take this petition to Premier David Eby, so every name counts.
